The coaching market

It seems that almost every goal can be solved by coaching. A coach can be anyone, but few really know what coaching is. Coaching is a catch-all for consultancy, training, personal therapy, human resources advice, inspiration, dieting and stress relief, talks and lectures, team leadership… In reality, however, coaching is a practice that originated in the world of sport. Later, it was extended to the professional world in the Anglo-Saxon world as Executive Coaching until it ended up “everywhere” with dubious rigour in Spain.

I indicate, making a parallel with the branches of current academic psychology and other areas of knowledge, what coaching should contribute in order to be grounded.

When not to hire coaching

Thus, coaching can never be the object of health, clinical or psychotherapeutic (treating health, nutrition, anxiety, other emotions), firstly because of legal health issues, and secondly because of the training required of the professional. Nor is it consultancy, information, advice, presentations, mediation, training. However, the lack of ethics, responsibility or sheer ignorance of many coaches – even when they have good will – leads them to offer to work with clients in areas for which they are not qualified. I believe that it is equally the responsibility of the client to inform themselves and to purchase these coaching services properly.
